The apartment

The apartment covers approximately 1,378 sq ft on one level, with a well-considered layout that flows seamlessly from one room to the next. The drawing room is the principal living space, offering ample room for multiple seating areas, while high ceilings and tall sash windows allow plenty of natural light to flood in. The kitchen/breakfast room sits just off the drawing room, with space for a proper dining table.

There are two double bedrooms, kept apart from each other. The main bedroom has an en suite, and a separate bathroom serves the second bedroom and guests. Situated on the top floor, the apartment enjoys excellent natural light from multiple aspects and appealing outlooks from most rooms. It would work as a full-time home or as a base in the city that's easy to look after. A lift provides convenient access to the apartment for residents and guests.

Outside

Residents share well-kept communal gardens, including the lavender beds the barracks are known for. The apartment has two private parking bays directly behind the building, plus two visitor permits.

The building

The site has an unusual history. Sir Christopher Wren designed a palace here for Charles II in 1683, based on Versailles. Work stopped when the King died in 1685, and the building was never finished. Over the next century it held prisoners of war, then French refugee clergy, and then became an army barracks.

It burned down on 19 December 1894. The replacement, finished by 1904, reused columns and stonework from Wren's building. The army left in the 1980s, and in 1994 most of the site was sold and turned into homes. Winchester's Military Museums still occupy part of it. The former parade ground is now the landscaped square at the centre.

Location

Peninsula Square is at the top of the High Street. The cathedral, independent shops, restaurants, the Theatre Royal and The Arc are all a short walk away. Schooling is a strong draw, with options including The Pilgrims' School, Winchester College, St Swithun's, The Westgate School, King's School and Peter Symonds College.

Winchester station is about 0.7 miles away, with trains to London Waterloo in around 58 minutes. Junctions 9 to 11 of the M3 are close by. The M27, A34 and A303 connect to the coast, the New Forest, Oxford and the West Country.
