Lot 20001871, St Mary`s Hall, Hall Street, Kingscourt, Co Cavan A82 D1H7

VIEWINGS AVAILABLE OVER THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS

‘You deserve somebody who knows why you`re rare`, so the poet Mark Anthony said. Perhaps he was talking about St. Mary`s Hall which has just come to the market for the first time in its history. St. Mary`s Hall is an impressive, imposing building which stands at a prominent location on a side street close to the Main Street and Market Square in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan.

This late Victorian six-bay,two-storey former parish hall, built in 1888 by the Rev. Fr. Flood, has over the years been the focal point of a wide range of activities undertaken by the local community. It could be described as ‘The Ballroom of Romance` for past generations and many will recall with great pleasure the late Fr Nicholas Foley`s pantomime when the rafters rang with music and laughter. The hall has witnessed the foundation of local clubs and organisations, the St. Mary`s Brass & Reed Band played their first practice notes there in 1915 and the band, of course, is still going strong. The hall was used by the Badminton Club for over a quarter of a century as well as being used by the local branch of the Boy Scouts, the Apostolic Work Society, the Legion of Mary, Alcoholics Anonymous, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Prayer Groups, the Pioneers and the Folk Choir. In recent times it housed the popular local library.

A fine example of late 19th century architecture, the former parish hall is built of stone with limestone quoins and deep moulded red brick cornice, a pitched slate roof with feature-crested terracotta ridge tiles, stepped red brick chimneystacks to gable ends with saw-tooth collars and clay pots, terracotta finial to apex of porch and carved limestone kneelers to gable end walls and to entrance porch. Concrete steps to either side of the porch provide access to first floor doorways. An oil-fired central heating system is installed.

Internal accommodation occupies approximately 306 sq.m, briefly comprising entrance hall, three rooms, ladies and gents toilets, boiler room and kitchen on ground floor. First floor accommodation consists of two rooms and ladies and gents toilets. The potential for this property is endless, given its size and location it`s sure to be suited for a number of business enterprises or for residential use.
